of counselling managers and partners, an annual 360 degree feedback process,
a system of personal development planning linked to performance appraisal,
our own competence model called Skills at Work that forms the foundation for
all assessment and development and the firm’s Values at Work that underpins
all that we do and is the foundation for the working environment we enjoy.
Our development community.
We have a strong national structure of development that
you can use flexibly to meet your needs. This comprises both technical training
teams and a central department of training and development professionals that
partner our business in the achievement of objectives and are a resource to
help you develop. At all levels, you will be supported by managers and partners
whose commitment to your development is second nature. Our Business Coach programmes
provide the line with the skills and tools to help you progress.
Development that is tailored to your needs at different stages.
We have formal development programmes that grow personal
and management skills as they are needed across our business streams. At qualified
level we place particular emphasis on personal skills that will stand you in
good stead in developing your career with us. We have a Post Qualified Development
Scheme that encompasses experience of a number of departments for those who
wish to develop broad business advisory skills. Our International Secondments
of up to two years complement this process.
At manager level we place particular emphasis on project management and people
management skills. We also pay attention to our core expertise of advising
business in growth issues and we are proud of our Business Growth training.
For those with aspirations to partnership there are Development Centres that
assist with the personal development needed. Of critical importance to us is
our client facing skills and our development programmes grow these from an
early stage.
For our specialists there is a range of technical seminars and courses. If
you work in tax you will be given the opportunity to qualify for the Certificate
in Advanced Research and Communication Skills for Tax Practitioners. This is
accredited by the City University and presented by the Inns of Court School
of Law. The certificate is unique to BDO Stoy Hayward and its objectives are
to improve skills in researching and interpreting tax law and writing up the
results of that research. Other specialist tax courses are also provided.
In addition to technical updates other specialist staff benefit from job related
training covering our audit approach, the needs of listed clients, International
Accounting standards and US GAAP, systems training, specialist corporate finance
training. Business Recovery specialists receive monthly internal updates on
relevant themes, initial training such as the Introduction to Insolvency course,
partner and managers seminars and opportunities to study for further qualifications
such as CPI and JIEB.
Our partners are also provided with ongoing development through
our Business Education programme, external courses and workshops to develop
advanced skills such as business development.
